Visual Essay #13 | Q1 2026

State of UX Design: I want to interview emerging, early career UX designers, and established UX practitioners.

Wait—but like, why though…?

OBJECTIVE:

1. I’ve been working as a UX designer for ~a billion years and I feel wildly out of touch with what it’s like getting started in this field both as a recent graduate, or as someone transitioning from another field.

2. I want to better understand how established UX practitioners could better support, mentor, and share resources with those breaking into this field.

3. The future is uncertain. People are all we’ve got. I would see this effort as a success if it helps establish connections between designers and a consistent network for gathering insights, finding jobs, or pooling freelance opportunities.

CALL TO ACTION:

I’m looking to interview early-career and veteran UX designers to better understand how people enter, grow, and stay in this field given the uncertainty and constrained job market. My goal is to surface emergent themes, tensions, and advice with participants and the broader UX community online. My reach is likely pretty small, but I’d like to fold this into a year long practice to start and see what resources and actions come from the research.

WANT TO BE INVOLVED?

If you’re an early career UX designer (recent grad, career switchers, designers in their first ~3 years), or a UX veteran (7+ years in UX or leadership experience)— I want to talk to you.

Here’s what you can expect if you want to be involved:

  • Format: 30 min conversation (questions sent beforehand to speed things up)

  • Recording: Audio recording only for transcription (no public video)

  • What will be public: Findings from discussions + quotes will be shared anonymously. Attribution will be given unless you prefer noto be named.

  • Outcome: Summarized digest of insights published on this website. Potential zine if I’m feeling ambitious
